Bernard Baruch (1870 - 1965)

Bernard Baruch was a very influential economic leader during the 1920s and 1930s born in Camden, SC. He owned a plantation just outside of Georgetown, SC, from the early 1900s through the 1940s. A lot of important persons visited his estate during that period, including Winston Churchill.

After WWII, his daughter, Belle, bought him out and maintained the plantation and surrounding properties until her death in the 1960s. Now, the land and buildings are know as Hobcaw Barony and are supervised by the Baruch Foundation.

The Georgetown County Library has recently added some 365 photographs from the family of Wall Street Financier Bernard Baruch to their digital library web site . By the end of the summer, the Georgetown Library hopes to have a digitized collection of newspapers up on their site as well.

Were You in 4-H?

Millions of young people in South Carolina have been involved in 4-H since the first corn club in 1908. 4-H alumni can spend hours talking about the good old days in 4-H. Since 4-H is celebrating 100 years, the State Teen Council is issuing a 4-H Alumni Challenge to all Clemson Extensions in the state to collect 4-H alumni names.

Anyone who has ever been a member of 4-H anywhere is asked to call the Kershaw County Extension office at 432-9071 or pick up a flyer from one the three branches of the Kershaw County Library to get your name on record. A statewide 4-H reunion will be held in the fall.
