Literacy Outreach & Training

Libraries are not just places for people who love to read. Libraries are places that encourage and promote reading. Unfortunately, in Kershaw County 1 in 5 adults read at a fifth grade level or below, and almost as many children begin school not ready to learn to read. This is not acceptable.

Libraries in Kershaw County are focusing on our literacy crisis by enhancing our collection to include additional material that encourages reading in children, expanding literacy programs to focus on building early literacy skills, reaching out to children and parents who are not traditional library users, and partnering with other agencies with a vested interest in improving our literacy rates.

You can help. Volunteer to inspire children to love reading or teach an adult to read, or join the Friends , a group that provides funds for children’s material and programming.
