Celebrating Families

Camden, SC – Kershaw County Library announces a new series of programs called Celebrating Families to be held at their varying locations beginning in October. Kershaw County Library’s goal is to gather families of all kinds for quality time with programs like Beautiful Gift Giving (December), Egg Decorating (April), First Aid at Home (July), and more. The Celebrate Families series will allow families to create, play, and learn while collectively enjoying the company of one another. All programs are free and open to the public. Crafting programs will have materials provided for families at no cost.

Oct. 12, 11 AM – 12:30 PM– Origami Art – The Japanese art of Origami is inexpensive and fun. All you need is a piece of paper and a flat, hard surface. Feel free to create your own pieces or look to an instructor for assistance.

Nov. 9, 10 AM – 2 PM– Festival of Felines – Come enjoy a great day of kitty loving play… we’ll start the day off with stories– Pete the Cat stories! Followed by pictures with Pete the Cat himself! All day we’re planning on having the Kershaw County Humane Society out with their cats and kittens available for adoption (you can take a cat home with you right then and there). We’ll have a vet speak at the library on your new cat or kitten. There will be a cat toy crafting (with catnip). We will also show funny cat videos! There’s going to be more, too! We CAT wait to show you what we have in store for you!

Dec. 5, 6:00-7:30 PM– Beautiful Gift Giving – Make the gift giving as beautiful as the gift itself.  Everyone in the family can learn to wrap a gift so that it shines; or make a beautiful gift tag or a special card for the people you love.  We have the techniques and the supplies.  You will have lovely finished products that you made with your own hands which will make your gift-giving even more special.

Jan.  23, 6:00-7:30 PM– Recycled Kitchen Scrubbers – Plastic netting from bags of fruit and a simple crochet stitch will be all that is needed to make useful pot scrubbers.  Easy!  Everyone in the family can do it!  Children can use it themselves or give them away as gifts.

Feb. 27, 6:00 – 7:30 PM – Game Day – Nothing is more fun than playing games with your family.  Kids love to hang with their parents and parents can relax and be reminded that their children are fun.  Bring the whole family and have some fun!

Mar. 26, 6:00 – 7:30 Money Matters – We could all use some financial tips! The kids could also benefit from learning some money matters. Let’s learn about budgeting, interest rates, and understanding good and bad debt. We’ll also talk about credit scores and other interesting information that could turn everyone’s life around!

Apr.  11, 11:00 – 12:30 PM – Egg Decorating – Use your imagination to decorate 2 eggs any way you like.  We’ll have the supplies, including hard-boiled eggs, dye, nail polish, paint, stickers, Sharpie pens, Cool Whip, rubber cement, and food coloring.

June 4, 6:15 -7:45 PM – Sewing 1, 2, 3 -Think of how many things you would not have to trash if you knew 3 or 4 basic sewing stitches.  Bring the family and learn the running stitch, the hemstitch, the backstitch and how to sew on a button.  You will also learn how to thread a needle and knot the thread.  Hand sewing is great for finger dexterity.  Bring something from home that needs repairing or make something here.  All materials supplied.

July 23, 6:00 – 7:30 PM – First Aid at Home – Someone slices a finger or gets burned – what can you do after an accident and before they get to a hospital?  We’ll tell you, demonstrate for you and let you practice, too.  Bring the family!

August 22, 11:00 – 12:30 PM – Painting on Canvas Fun!  We’ll supply the materials and some instruction, you get to do the painting and have fun!  For all ages.

We’ll be enjoying the morning out by walking and reading the book Duck on a Bike by David Shannon.

May 9, 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM, ELGIN – StoryWalk® – The StoryWalk® project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library. We’ll be enjoying the morning out by walking and reading the book Tap the Magic Tree by Christie Matheson.
