Epidemic Preparedness Procedures

The Kershaw County Library will provide important public services during an epidemic as a source of reliable information and an institution that improves the quality of life during difficult times. Since flu-like diseases spread through contact and proximity, the library must be careful to balance need for our services against our potential for becoming a place where an epidemic can be transmitted and spread.

Stages of public services:
Business as Usual: Public need for information is gathered and made available.
First Stage: If the Library Director judges concern and possible spread is growing, staff and public are kept educated and informed about the risks and how to avoid them. Information and reliable sites will be posted on the library website. Otherwise, business as usual.
Second Stage: On the recommendation of public officials or after consultation between the director and Board of Trustees, the Director closes library facilities to assemblies, meetings, programs, or prolonged use of any kind (including study, reading, computer use). All locations become checkout, return, quick browsing, and quick reference locations. Overdue fines are suspended immediately and the public informed.
Third Stage: On the recommendation of public officials or after consultation between the director and Board of Trustees, the Library Director closes library buildings to all public use. The Director will determine, based on situation and staff available, whether to have staff report to work for telephone reference, pick up/drop off service, or to institute a book mail service.
